Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), perfluorocarbons (PFCs) and sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) are used in a wide variety of applications ranging from aerosol cans to industrial refrigeration and electrical systems which may contain thousands of kilograms of these substances. The paper at hand describes the uses and emission sources of these gases within the European Union, and briefly discusses some of the options available for limiting emissions from these sources. The projected emission figures for 2010 quoted in section 2 are based on a "business-as-usual" scenario assuming the current level of regulation in the EU. The forecast also includes assumptions which, as well as the uncertainties related to forecasts in general, should be kept in mind when reading the paper regarding practice improvements and considerably decreased leakage as a result of "increased awareness" among fluorocarbon users (cf. March 1998).
